Amazon.co.uk Review The Defamation Of Strickland Banks, the second LP from Forest Gate-bred singer/musician Ben Drew, will be a surprise for anyone who spent meaningful time with his 2006 debut Who Needs Actions When You’ve Got Words. That album cast him as a potty-mouthed rapper, threatening to stab you with a biro over choppy acoustic guitar. Now, following a quick makeover, he re-emerges as blue-eyed soul singer, fronting a suite of bittersweet love songs steeped in vintage Stax and Motown. What might seem a rushed rebranding makes more sense if you know a little about Drew's creative drive, though; obsessed with cinema and narrative, Plan B is a storyteller at heart, and â¦Strickland Banks' songs trace a tale through the London underworld, Drew playing a soul singer from the East End jailed for a crime he didn’t commit. It's a concept that works, thanks largely to Drew’s voice--surprisingly strong, and more than capable of handling everything from upbeat Northern soul to fraught numbers like "Welcome To Hell". The narrative never overwhelms the quality of the songs, though, and for anyone disappointed such an impressively angry man has gone a bit Paolo Nutini on us, there's the occasional rap delivered with anger more savage for its infrequent deployment. –-Louis Pattison

If i hear one more idiot say sell out..... April 10, 2010 Mr. T. R. John (uk) 42 out of 47 found this review helpful
It makes me laugh seeing all these people making comments about selling out, is plan b selling his own range of toasters or bouncing around rapping whilst rhianna or kylie minogue dance around in some pop video? no far from it, what hes merely done is change his style made something different, hes elevated away from his gritty and hard hitting first album and pushed things forward, something that should be celebrated in an age where you have rappers talking baout there cars and the b1tch mobiles pumped up with b1tch juice etc etc plan b tells stories and is a genuine talented songwriter, hes not a manufactured pop article hes a superb talent. whilst british music is full of same old same old indie bands and poor television act winners, plan b sets himself apart being able to sing better than any of the vile JLS and raps better than the likes of eminem or whatever other so called rap artist out there, he also manages to hold the flag for brtish music and has made an album which will be listened to and talked about long after this year and the next. i`m also fully confident in saying i doubt he`ll be on celebrity big brother or opening a local shopping centre anytime soon. if you have any pre-conceptions in regards to him his music as sell out, then you really should take a long hard look at yourself. hes something we all should be proud off in a chart filled an obsessed with manufactured and corporate trash. ITS TIME FOR PLAN B.
made the hairs stand up on my neck June 8, 2010 Maggie R (Kent, UK) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Saw Plan B on Jonathan Ross and that voice made the hairs stand up on my neck. Whoever or whatever I had to have that voice in my collection and Strickland Banks definately cuts the mustard. Forget X Factor and all that this guy reminds me of Motown at its best and Phil Spectors wall of sound, he can really belt out a song. It takes a lot to part a 60 year from her cash but I'm looking forward to the next Plan B, rumour has it may be regaee, can't wait!
A good recommendation July 5, 2010 H. M. Kingston (Worksop, England) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Our son highly recommended this album and we're so glad he did: Plan B was new to us.
We're of a certain generation and as we listened we heard echos of Smokey Robinson and some other soul singers but this album was by no means nostalgic. Intermixed with some great lyrical tracks (My Love Goes Down for example)are upbeat tracks with some rap passages. It's never boring. He has a great voice.
Best Album buy this year and for many years June 7, 2010 J. Prendergast (London) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Loved it from my first listen to the 100th. Steeped in the Atlantic style (love the vinyl look to the CD as well) but keeping it distinctive and unique. Be a while before I stop playing this bad boy.
